The Trump Administration is moving forward with a new plan to bypass immigration courts and deport undocumented immigrants.<\/p>\n
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) published a notice in the Federal Register that enables DHS to \u201cexercise the full remaining scope of its statutory authority to place in expedited removal\u201d \u2026 illegal immigrants who cannot prove that they have been in the United States for the past two years.<\/p>\n
This new rule will provide a new means to swiftly remove people from the US who lack proper status without further burdening the immigration courts. Immigration courts have been struggling to keep up with the workload lately and backlogs have reached record highs, closing in on 1 million cases.<\/p>\n
The move comes a week after a new asylum regulation was also introduced. That rule prevents immigrants from seeking asylum in the US if they first pass through another country and don\u2019t apply for protection in that country. The head of US Customs and Border Protection said the new asylum rule was a small \u201cpilot\u201d for now but that was not enough for those who oppose the rule. Two federal lawsuits (California and Washington, D.C) have already been filed challenging the asylum rule.<\/p>\n
President Trump also recently promised that mass deportation operations would be sweeping the nation, but it appears that the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids have not occurred yet.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
