Supplemental Security Income<\/h2>\n

Supplemental Security Income (SSI)<\/strong> is a program for blind, aged, and disabled people from low- or zero-income households. This program provides eligible residents with cash for food, clothing and shelter, striving to meet the basic needs of those who require this assistance.<\/p>\n

Before you apply for this program, you first have to find out if you\u2019re eligible. You can do so by answering some questions through the Benefit Eligibility Screening Tool<\/strong><\/a>. Once you\u2019ve determined whether you\u2019re eligible for SSI, you can visit the Social Security Administration website<\/strong><\/a> to apply.<\/p>\n

Social Security Benefits<\/h2>\n

As a permanent US resident, if you work and pay your Social Security taxes, you earn credits every time you file your taxes. You can earn up to 4 credits per year, and once you\u2019ve accumulated 40 credits (or worked for about 10 years in the United States), you\u2019ll be eligible for Social Security benefits.<\/p>\n

Green card holders earn 1 credit for every US$1,160 earned up to US$4,640. If you\u2019re married or have children, they qualify as entitled dependents for these benefits.<\/p>\n

Medicare<\/h2>\n

Medicare is a health insurance program that green card holders 65 years and older can take advantage of. New US residents<\/strong>, however, do not immediately qualify for this program.<\/p>\n
